My name is Tany Rios Castro, I was born and raised in Lima, Peru, and after I finished high school, I got the opportunity to move to the U.S in 2010. I started my creative journey in Los Angeles, where I got an Associate Degree in Fine Arts from Mt. San Antonio College. In 2014 I moved to San Francisco to study at The Academy of Art University, where I recently graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design. After living in San Francisco for 3 years, I moved to Mountain View in 2017. Looking for ways to get involved in the community, I became part of Leadership Mountain View, a community and civic leadership program. Thanks to this program, I was able to be part of the Working Scholars program from Study.com, which allows adults to earn a college degree for free. In June 2019, I became part of the first graduating class of this online program earning a Liberal Arts Degree from Thomas Edison State University. I’m a passionate learner, always looking for ways to educate myself by constantly taking classes in different fields to continue building and nurturing my skills.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.

Skills

I speak and write fluently in Spanish because it’s my first language.Another leadership opportunity I had was when I became the president of the “Viva Latino” club at the Academy of Art University, the first Latinx club on campus. This role helped me to find out that I was able to support others and lead by example. My background includes volunteering different nonprofits in my community to help them build a new brand identity and promote their events through marketing strategies.

1. What's the most courageous thing you've ever done?

I believe we all do courageous things daily, even if these are not a big deal in the eyes of others. Something that I am very proud of in my personal life is that I stood up for myself and moved to San Francisco to attend college when everyone in my family was against it. When I moved to the U.S with my mom and my brother we lived in Los Angeles (LA) because my dad was there but LA never felt like home to me. The 4 years I lived in LA I struggled in making myself feel at home since I’m not very close to my dad. My dad moved to the U.S when I was six and I didn’t see him again until I was 16, so It was a little strange for me. The truth is I was looking for ways to get out of LA and when it was time to transfer from junior college to university I started searching for universities far away from LA. A few months later I got accepted at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco (SF) and as soon as I told my dad he told me that he would not support me if I moved away. I had a lot of family members in LA and he put all of them against me and they tried to pressure me to stay, but against all odds, I made it to SF and started my career as a graphic designer. It was a complicated journey and I had to get a lot of student loans, but I don’t regret doing so because it was the best decision I made in my life so far. Also, a courageous thing I did in my career, is that I overcame self-doubt and I stopped comparing myself to others because I changed my mindset and I started building my confidence and working on myself. I feel that I’m on the right track and I’m celebrating all the little achievements I’ve accomplished so far.

2. How are creativity and innovation related?

Innovating is creating something new that’s how creativity and innovation are linked. There would not be the possibility of innovation without imagining first how something could become a reality. Creativity is the starting point in the process of innovation. Thinking about how a final product could look, helps our minds to elaborate on what this product could become, and therefore we will end up the process by solving the problem and making something innovative for the audience that we would like to reach.

3. Why do companies need clarity and creativity?

A company without clarity or creativity would not last over time. A company needs clarity since the beginning by building the core values of their brand so their employees work with transparency and are prepared to work together through challenges. Also, a company needs creativity because all employees are creative whether they notice it or not. Employees are helping these companies grow and become more successful by bringing new ideas to life. This is why clarity and creativity are necessary for a company to succeed.

4. You have 30 minutes of free time. What do you do with it?

When I have 30 minutes of free time I choose to write. Most of the writing I do is for self-expression like journaling, poetry, and sometimes short stories. Writing allows me to put my ideas together and helps me stay motivated to create. Since I started writing more often I decided to create a poetry book called All feelings are welcome where I am putting together the feelings I go through on the daily basis and how to be okay with them because they are a part of me.

5. What is one risky and bold goal in life you have? Or, if you could dedicate your life to solving one problem, what would it be?

I have many goals in life but if I need to dedicate my life to solve just one problem it would be to change the education system. I would like to see schools give more importance to soft skills like creative thinking, teamwork, conflict resolution, etc. because these are core skills that everyone should have to be part of an environment where everyone works in harmony. Many people struggle to decide their career path because society wants people to focus on careers that are going to earn them more money, instead of deciding a career that is going to fulfill them personally. That’s why I would like to work on building a better education system and help future generations live more fulfilled lives.

6. Explain your creative process

Often my creative inspiration comes in the most unpredictable moments but when I want to bring a creative idea to life I often start by getting a cup of tea and listening to some calm music to help my ideas flow. Then I start writing on a piece of paper to help me put all my thoughts together, sometimes it's an outline, and other times it’s a mind map. After I have a specific idea of what I want to create, I go online to get some visual inspiration and start researching the main topic of my creative idea. Now after I have all the resources I start sketching as much as I can to visualize how my idea could become a reality. Finally, I try a computer version first in black and white and then I start adding the colors that fit the concept of my idea.

7. What is the best advice that you have been given?

Every day, I have the blessing to share breakfast with my mom and we always have long conversations about life and the main thing that she always tells me is to “enjoy the process” and I believe this is what is leading my life from now on. The way I take this advice is that I can apply it in my creative process but also in my daily life. In my daily life, I understand that there is so much uncertainty and the only thing I have is today, so I have to enjoy the journey and accept my present. On the creative side many times when I am creating something I worry about the end result and I forget to enjoy the journey so I’m deciding from now on to enjoy the process and accept all that comes with it.

8. What is your definition of creativity?

Creativity for me is having the freedom to express myself and bring to life something that I visualize in my mind.

9. What 10 songs are on your favorite playlist right now?

My Future - Billie Eilish Funny - Tori Kelly Losing You - Boy Pablo The Look - Metronomy Wrote A Song About You - MNEK My Jinji - Sunset Rollercoaster Summer 2020 - Jhené Aiko TKN - Rosalia Human - The Killers The Joke - Brandi Carlile

10. How do you want people to remember you?

I would like people to remember me with a smile on their face because I always want people to feel good about themselves. I always try my best to have meaningful conversations to get to know a person on a deeper level and my hope it's that after our conversation they see my authentic self and that they could trust me if they ever need help with anything.
