Bio

Hey, I'm Jack. I'm kinda tall, have blue eyes, and have two metal bars in my right arm from a skateboarding injury. Unfortunately I was never very good at skating. I'm a product designer with a background in creative writing, & illustrative animation. I currently am an Admin and Content Lead for 19k members at Design Buddies, an inclusive design community, am interested in building communities for future-thinking platforms, and the comedic rule of three.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.

What's the most courageous thing you've ever done?

What immediately comes to mind is back in middle school my friends and I used to ride our bikes to school. There was a kid who lived near us but wasn't really in our group, who sometimes rode his bike with us since he lived nearby and because his mom wanted him to ride with us. One day a bully was really letting him have it and all my friends just rode their bikes past like nothing was happening. I stopped and confronted the bully, forcing him to stop attacking and berating this kid. Then we biked home together. What made this simple act courageous, I think, was not as much the stopping of the bully, but actually just stopping to do something when I noticed something wrong occurring, and all of my friends just biking past. I think, especially as kids, it's so easy to just not do something or give in to peer pressure, so looking back it's something I'm really glad I did. Man, we were all so mean to each other as kids. I hope it's better now.

How are creativity and innovation related?

There is no innovation without creativity. One may be able to identify a need or a solution for some problem, and even craft that solution, but that doesn't necessarily make it innovative. Innovation is the result of some focused creative endeavor, from problem identification, to conceptualization, to research and testing and iterating; To me, innovation is creativity manifested.

Why do companies need clarity and creativity?

Companies need clarity and creativity to succeed. I take success for a company in 2021 to mean profitability, impact, familiarity, flexibility and growth. All the buzzwords. Clarity and creativity have been the basis of success for every project I've worked on, so I can only imagine how much more important these become in a larger operation. Without clarity there is no vision in which you're working towards. Without creativity or diversity in voice, there is no route to the right solution.

You have 30 minutes of free time. What do you do with it?

Context is king. It's been beautiful out lately, and if I've been at my desk all day I'm using this time to go shoot some hoops and get off my butt. I'm chugging water, I'm checking the latest in Design Buddies, or I'm playing with my pup, Georgia Blue. Maybe I'm taking a walk and calling my sister to see what's happening in the film biz. Whatever I’m doing, it's helping me take a step back, so I can return to my work with a new perspective or vibe.

What is one risky and bold goal in life you have? Or, if you could dedicate your life to solving one problem, what would it be?

I aim to make the world a bit more fun with my design. For me this means understanding when to make some experience slick and efficient, and when to keep another more complex and jumbled. How can I make someone's walk to work in the morning more enjoyable? How can I create a similar kind of feeling for those working from home? What will our future experiences look and feel like? The world needs a bit more meaningful, and meaningless fun, and I want to design it into existence.

Explain your creative process

When I start a new project, these days its inception stems more from problem identification than inspiration, but both are important and related. From there I play around with discovering if this is in fact the right problem. After defining the problem, I research, I identify potential solutions, and then narrow my focus on one particular solution. I test and iterate, and test and iterate, take a few steps back and tilt my head to the left as I look at my work... and test and iterate some more.

What is the best advice that you have been given?

Lean in to what it is that makes you, you. Question why it is that makes you, you. Understand what your life would be like if you weren't you.

What is your definition of creativity?

Creativity is a way of getting things done better. It's a new perspective, a challenge to tradition, and a unique approach to some ~thing~. It's not necessarily just what turned the stone into the wheel, but why the stone was crafted into the wheel.

What 10 songs are on your favorite playlist right now?

Man, I hope y'all release this epic playlist of all WGI applicants. More good music please. Frank Sinatra - Something Stupid Baby Keem - No Sense Jessie Ware - Save A Kiss The Lighthouse OST - Arrival Young Cellski - Livin In The Bay Thomas Newman - The Night Window TV On The Radio - Happy Idiot IDLES - Never Fight A Man With A Perm SiR - John Redcorn BADBADNOTGOOD - Goodbye Blue

How do you want people to remember you?

Not just as the decently tall, sarcastic dude, but as the decently tall, sarcastic dude that was fun to be around. I want people to really just feel comfortable being themselves around me, and I hope that people remember their time with me in a way that they were able to freely be themselves.
